Do you think that unusual packaging is only created for a rare product? Designers who have developed concepts for milk cartons may disagree with you. A milk bottle that resembles a beer bottle or a bottle with a hole in the middle is not the limit of creativity. We suggest you see for yourself.

Branding agency KOLORO will develop original packaging for milk and dairy products.

Packaging requirements for milk and milk products

Concept. The packaging design should be in line with the brand positioning. For example, if the milk is supplied by a small family farm that recycles all of its waste, this will definitely be reflected in the packaging. It will be made of cardboard or glass.

Environmental regulations. The materials from which milk containers are made comply with the established norms. The design takes storage and transportation features into account.

Milk packaging: types

There are trends in the design of packaging for milk and dairy products that foreign and Ukrainian creatives like to follow. In 2017, the focus is primarily on organic, fresh and high quality products.

Nothing extra

The concept of brevity is one of modern designers’ favorites. The best color scheme for milk packaging is the absence of color itself. The transparent or white version is considered the most winning. The combination of white with blue or light green color looks organic. Approximately 80% of all milk cartons combine these three colors. Of course, there are exceptions.

The concept of brevity

Betting on the taste of the audience

Although the audience for dairy products is wide, manufacturers try to segment it and win each category of customers separately. For example, packaging designed for teenagers. It is designed to overcome the dislike of dairy drinks that is often seen in teenagers. The innovative milk carton resembles a soft drink bottle. It’s convenient to take with you, and the fun label can complement interesting instagram compositions.

History

Quality design always contains a well-crafted story. If the emphasis is on eco-friendliness, the packaging will probably contain images of grass, cows, rustic cottages and clay pots. Emphasize freshness by depicting a few drops of milk. This design solution is most commonly found in the supermarket. It’s a classic.

Quality design

See for yourself

When the manufacturer once again wants to emphasize the naturalness of the product, he uses transparent plastic or glass containers. This way, the customer will see the product itself. The buyer will associate this technique with cleanliness and freshness.

Luxury above all else

Despite the simplicity of the product itself, the design can be downright luxurious and expensive. As a rule, manufacturers fight for the premium segment of the market in this way. White and gold colors are often used, such milk packaging is elegant and concise.

Luxury above all else

Seal of Approval

If a producer places a big emphasis on unique equipment, farm sustainability or expert judgment, this will be reflected in the packaging. The label will have words and numbers that argue for the quality of the product.

For example, the shape of this package is uncomplicated, made of cardboard. The color scheme (a combination of white and blue) is not new to dairy packaging. Attention is drawn to diagrams and charts that show the composition of the milk and the percentage of fat content.

Seal of Approval

Forgetting the classics

Fresh and bold ideas should find their way out, even if the product is seemingly very simple. Often original ideas are offered by novice designers.

Branding agency KOLORO will develop milk packaging that is creative and unique.

Creative milk packaging
  • The San Francisco-based would-be designer thought up the design for Hathor Creamery’s milk carton. One of the designer’s tasks is to emphasize that all processes in production are linked to the preservation of ecology. Therefore, milk cartons are fully recyclable. The customer wished that there would be no standard stories, and unusual shape, colors and original fonts would emphasize the uniqueness of the production. The designer used retro typography, rich colors and an elegant shape. It managed to achieve a vintage style that made the brand stand out from the competition. This milk carton has a bold design with retro references.

  • Australian designer Natasha Subianto has come up with a milk carton with an unusual ergonomic handle. The design project needed to create packaging that emphasized the purity of the product. Only two colors are used in one container – white and bright colored.

  • Vitrina Advertising, a branding company based in Romania, has redesigned the packaging for the Monor Dairy brand, which is well known for the naturalness and high quality of its products. Therefore, the designer decided to show the very source of fresh milk – the cow.

  • The packaging of Jásztej milk is distinctive. The emphasis is on the front side of the carton, not on the brand. At first glance, it appears to be a “no name” product. Betting is done on the percentage of fat content in the milk. The packaging provides a quick answer to one of the most important questions shoppers have – fat percentage.

There are student projects that have not yet been realized, but are definitely worthy of attention. They are broadening the way shoppers and consumers look at traditional dairy packaging.

  • Alfonso Sotelo, a student from Barcelona, came up with a bold packaging for Milko milk. An aspiring designer created a package made of aluminum that could be carried everywhere. The different colors allow customers to easily differentiate the milk by taste. The standardized bottom of the package evokes familiar associations for the consumer. The bright element of the jar is the colorful “legs” that mimic an udder.

  • The concept is from a student from Norway – Andress Drage. The student designed a milk packaging for a premium segment. Andres suggested a soft handwritten font, the emphasis is on the uniqueness of the bottle and the custom cap. The shape resembles a wine container with a cork lid.

It is hoped that unusual shapes and colors will soon appear on our supermarket shelves as well. Read the analysis of the dairy products market in Ukraine here.
