The consumer norm in Ukraine is 8 kg of cereals per year per person, but in reality this figure is much lower. Ukrainians refuse to consume cereals and porridge in favor of other substitute products.

As a rule, cereals are bought 1-2 times a month, more often people with average income, or people with large families, or residents of towns and villages buy cereals.

Cereal production has mixed trends, and this is primarily due to the grain harvest. Thus, in January-October 2012 cereals were produced 239.5 thousand tons, which is 2% higher than in January-October 2011. Buckwheat, rice and millet cereals were produced most of all.

Since 2008, exports of cereals have been growing every year, but in 2010 they decreased due to a decrease in exports of buckwheat groats. In 2011, exports amounted to 30.5 thousand tons of groats. The main importing countries of Ukrainian groats are Russia (its share of exports from Ukraine is almost 50%), Belarus (share of about 15%), Moldova (12.2%), Azerbaijan (5.8%), Georgia (3.6%), other countries (almost 14%). Ukraine exports cereals to Russia, Poland, Germany, Slovakia and China.
