Design of flexible packaging for gravure printing by KOLORO
Note that the leading brands in their segment, the “brands with the crown on their heads” so to speak, have one important feature – aesthetic and sometimes non-standard product packaging design.
Packaging and label design – A key element of consumer product branding. The packaging of the product allows it to stand out favorably against the background of competitive brands, beautiful and original design of packaging and label attracts attention, encourages the consumer to spontaneous or deliberate purchase.
Professionally designed packaging increases consumer loyalty, demonstrates competitive advantages and consumer qualities of the product.
If your “crown” someone gradually begins to take over, although the quality of your product has not changed, and the competitive advantages have remained unchanged, it is worth thinking about changing the packaging and redesigning the brand.
Quality and intriguing packaging can increase product sales several times over without additional advertising costs.
Recently, flexible packaging is becoming more and more popular and in demand compared to the use of standard boxes and bottles.
This popularity is due to the presence of a large number of advantages of flexible packaging.
Flexible packaging is
Container or container of any size and shape, whose internal atmosphere pressure coincides with the ambient pressure due to the properties of the material – this is flexible packaging. This product packaging adapts perfectly to changes in external pressure, it shrinks and expands to the right size, depending on changes in the environment.
Advantages of flexible product packaging
The main advantages of flexible packaging over traditional packaging materials:
1. lightweight and “weightless” packaging – it does not require storage in large warehouses and significantly reduces transportation costs.
2. Safety and airtightness. Barrier properties of the materials from which the packaging is made prevent the penetration of oils, moisture, fats, gases, various microorganisms, ultraviolet light, providing a high level of product safety.
3. Durability. Flexible packaging made from multilayer films – rigid, strong, tear-resistant.
Flexible packaging is convenient, versatile and economical. In addition, it can be easily disposed of and used for further recycling. For its production polymer films based on polyolefins, foil and paper are used, which makes it possible to pack almost any goods in flexible packaging. It is especially used for food items such as tea, candy, snacks, seeds, breadcrumbs, chips, bulk and cereals, mayonnaise, ketchups and sauces, cookies and more.
Flexible packaging is also a great tool for communicating with the consumer. Bright and original design, colorful printing of the packaging attracts the consumer and stimulates sales. Due to the use of polymer films as part of the packaging, it is possible to achieve the effect of matte packaging or metallization, it is possible to use transparent windows in the packaging.

Flexible packaging design
The development of packaging and its original design is quite a complex process in today’s market competition. Manufacturers are trying hard to come up with something new, beautiful or extraordinary to surprise the consumer and attract their attention. Therefore, before starting to design flexible packaging it is necessary to study competitors, analyze the market and understand what consumers expect.
According to market research, it is much easier to decide on the shape of the packaging, color scheme, graphics and text elements on the packaging, and more likely to hit right on target.
It should not be forgotten that the packaging should reveal the positioning of the brand, tell its legend, and the design should be consistent with the overall corporate identity of the company.
Printing of flexible packaging
A large number of printing methods are used to print packages and labels.
However, all types of printing are based on three basic methods: letterpress , flat and gravure.
1. Flatbed printing (offset printing) is the standard print most often used in a print shop. It implies that all printable elements are on the same plane along with the whitespace elements. This type of printing is the cheapest, but its disadvantage is that it takes a long time to adjust the correct proportion in the balance of ink and water. Due to equipment downtime, this method of printing becomes more expensive.
2. High printing (flexography, flexo printing) is a printing process in which the printing elements are higher than the whitespace elements. The letterpress method is usually used for small print runs, and it is usually web-to-roll printing. In addition, the process of preparation for such printing takes quite a lot of time and effort.
3. Deep printing is a printing method in which the printing elements are below the whitespace elements. Deep printing has a number of advantages over flat and letterpress printing.

Advantages of gravure printing
Deep printing makes it possible to reproduce tones and halftones and thereby achieve variegation. This printing produces crisp images with all the details. In addition, gravure printing also enables accurate color transfer in CMYK* scheme (brand color is preserved), the quality of such printing will always be the same from print run to print run.
CMYK scheme (Cyan – Magenta – Yellow- Key color) – scheme of color formation in printing: thanks to three basic colors (cyan – magenta – yellow) and their mixing green, blue, red, black and other colors are obtained.
Gravure presses are characterized by the highest operating speeds. Depth printing is a favorable option for printing packaging where adhesive application is required for subsequent cold gluing. Deep printing allows both cold glue and printing to be applied in one run. Allows you to use multiple materials for printing (multi-layer material). Such printing is most often used for large and medium runs of packaging for flour, confectionery, ice cream, snacks and other food products.
