Plastic bottles have long been a common part of everyday life. A wide variety of liquids are filled into plastic bottles all over the world. A huge variety of plastic bottles and jars, has another name – PET containers. This container is made of polyethylene terephthalate – a polymer that was first used for the production of bottles by specialists of the American Du Pont Company in 1977.


The popularity of plastic containers is due to their light weight combined with high strength. Another advantage of plastic containers is that they can be recycled to obtain secondary raw materials. An equally important factor is the low cost of production of plastic bottles compared to the production of glass bottles or aluminum water cans.



Plastic mineral water bottle design
Recently, most manufacturers, not only large but also smaller ones, pay a lot of attention to protecting their product from counterfeiting. For this purpose, non-standard containers with complex and unique shapes are used. Entrepreneurs who have spent considerable funds to purchase equipment to produce bottles with unique geometry usually also invest in thorough marketing research, advertising campaigns to promote their own brand, and product label design.
“A trend among mineral and drinking water producers is the production of simple bottles with complex elements. In this case, logos or names of companies or the brand itself are placed on a simple bottle by means of blowing.

Some manufacturers produce bottles with various notches, grooves, “ties” and other distinctive elements. All these insignia are quite difficult to counterfeit on cheap equipment, and it is not economically feasible to counterfeit bottles on quality equipment.


In addition to exclusive design, manufacturing companies use additional ways to protect their branded products:
- – it can be a cap with the presence of the company logo;
- – and some self-adhesive labels in the original shape;
- – and the presence of a handle on the neck of the bottle.
Of course, all these elements contribute to the cost of the product, but with proper promotion, such an investment is more than justified, and become an integral part of brand promotion.

There have also been elements that have appeared on almost all bottles recently:
- label recess (segmented or circular);
- special PET recycling label on the side of the bottom;
- the process number of the mold slot.
These elements can only be qualitatively made on high-performance equipment, which means that they are in themselves already a sign of the quality of plastic containers.


Creating a bottle with a unique geometry. 3D modeling of a plastic bottle
The development of computer technology has also found its application in the production of plastic bottles. 3D modeling is increasingly being used to create plastic containers. Three-dimensional modeling allows for a combination of scale accuracy and photorealistic images, and various changes can be easily made at the mold development stage.

If the task is to focus attention on a single object, conveying its size and shape, then object visualization is used for this purpose, which is often used in advertising or when creating test images. Bottle design and equipment performance may vary from company to company, but the basic principles of PET container production remain the same. The equipment is selected according to the required production volume, combination with existing equipment and budget.

Making a plastic bottle
The starting material for the production of plastic bottles is a PET preform. During the production process, the preform is heated and the bottle is produced by stretching and blowing. PET preforms are made of granulated polymer-polyethylene terephthalate by pressing. Transparency and color of the future container is planned at the initial stage of preform production.
1. plastic bottle manufacturing technology
Plastic bottles are produced in a process called injection stretch blow molding (ISBM). It is a two-stage process with two phases. The first phase is the production of the preform, which looks like a thin glass tube. In the second phase, the preform is softened by heating and the full-size bottle is produced by internal air inflation.


The bottle neck is finalized during the preform production phase. Afterwards, only the body of the bottle is blown out. A special feature of all PET bottles is the presence of a ring on the neck, which is located slightly below the thread. This allows the preform to be mechanically gripped and moved to the final blowing point, and also facilitates the transportation of the finished container.
Preforms are produced using multi-cell equipment that can produce up to 144 preforms in a single blow cycle. The types of preforms are extremely diverse. They can have different neck sizes and a very diverse range of colors.

Two types of equipment are used to manufacture plastic bottles:
- single-phase;
- and biphasic.
In single-phase equipment, the preform is produced from polyethylene terephthalate pellets and the finished bottle is blown here. In other words, both phases of plastic bottle production are combined in one machine.
The two-phase type of equipment involves making a preform on one machine and then transferring it to another machine to complete the process. In this way, it is possible to make preforms in stock and store them in a warehouse until needed, or to buy ready-made preforms. One preform takes up about 12 times less space than a finished bottle and can be used to produce a variety of bottles.


If the manufacturer is engaged in producing plastic bottles from ready-made preforms, it can significantly increase the productivity of the equipment. One such machine can produce from 1200 to 1400 bottles per hour. Buying ready-made preforms avoids the need to control the quality of the raw materials, and allows you to vary the type and weight of preforms without the additional time and money required to replace expensive blowing cells.
A wide range of preforms allows you to choose the required type of mold from PEN, PET or composite materials. There are also multilayer preforms with an inner layer of high-strength materials such as nylon, which significantly increases the consumer quality of the finished bottle.

Regardless of whether the manufacturer uses ready-made preforms or makes them himself, the next stage of production is the blowing of the plastic bottle itself.
2. PET bottle blowing
The principle of operation of any equipment for the manufacture of PET bottles is virtually identical, but can be adjusted and modified depending on the desired final properties of the container.
The available type of such equipment are machines that can be operated manually during the manufacturing process. It consists of a heater for preforms and a part for direct blowing of PET bottles. This device is used by firms with small production volumes and allows you to produce about 1100 bottles of one liter per hour. The price of such equipment is quite low.


Another type of equipment is automatic type machines. In it, the process of container production is fully automated, starting with the loading of molds, production of bottles and up to bottling of the required beverages. The preform heater of such equipment is made in the form of a vertical or horizontal bracket and does not take up much space. Rotary rotary machines have a constantly moving wheel that sends the preforms to the heating machine and then, after balancing the temperature, directs them to blow molding. This stage involves the preforms entering the cells and after passing the conveyor, directing them to the blowing stage. Once the carousel has completed a full revolution around its axis, the bottles are sent to the final stage. The cell is released and the processing of the new preform begins.
During the heating phase, the preforms are subjected to automatic quality control. The neck, which is subsequently designated for capping, and the cross-section of the preform are inspected. At this stage, preforms with neck defects or insufficient ovality are rejected.
3. transportation line for plastic bottles
Once the bottles are produced, they are ready for further use, i.e. bottling. Due to their lightness, empty plastic bottles are very unstable. This property is taken into account by manufacturers of equipment for the transportation of empty bottles to the bottling plant. The light weight of the bottles helps to carry them during filling by the ring on the neck, which minimizes the adjustment of the equipment. The fill height is calculated from the neck to the neck clamp and remains the same in all bottles of the same batch. In some cases, empty bottles are moved using air – traveling on special low-friction rails and supporting the neck with airflow. The shape of the rails allows air to pass through them. The ring on the neck is lifted by the air jet and the bottle is given the desired direction. The air stream method has the advantage that the bottle does not come into contact with the sides of the conveying belt.


Thus, the process of manufacturing plastic bottles for mineral water or other liquids can be chosen according to the capabilities of a particular manufacturer and the necessary requirements for the container.
