Paints and varnishes (paints and varnishes) are materials consisting of several components and which are applied to the surface to be finished in a liquid or powdered state. After drying, paintwork materials form a durable film, which is called a paint coating. The main purpose of paint coating is to protect surfaces from environmental factors (water, temperature, various chemical and harmful substances, corrosion). Paint and varnish materials are also used for design purposes: to give a surface a certain look, color or texture.
All paint and varnish materials are divided into the following groups:
- basic (paint, varnish, enamel, putty, primer, plaster);
- Intermediate (solvents, thinners, resins, olive oil, siccatives – gas pedals of paint drying);

In addition, paints and varnishes are also classified according to other characteristics:
- by the sequence of material application on the surface: coating (basic), intermediate, priming, impregnation.
- by purpose: paints for painting metal, wooden, leather and other surfaces, for painting cars, furniture, etc.
- by gloss: deep matt, matte, semi-matte, semi-gloss, glossy, high gloss.
- by drying method: cold drying and hot drying.

Consumers of paint and varnish materials can be divided into the following segments:

- Government Consumers.
Let’s take a closer look at individual consumers. Paint and varnish materials are bought by both men and women aged from 16 to 65, but the majority are still men. For themselves and the needs of their family buys 79% of respondents, for work buy paint 12%, for friends or relatives – 8%. According to the survey Ukrainians most often buy paint because the surface to be painted is dirty (45% of respondents), because the paint has fallen into disrepair (36% of respondents), the color of paint faded (14% of respondents) and only 5% of respondents buy paint because they decided to update the design. In Europe, almost 50% of consumers buy paint to change the design and 33% because the surfaces have become dirty.
The majority of consumers buy paint and varnish materials on the advice of a sales assistant at the point of sale (48% of consumers), 22% buy paint and varnish materials on the advice of relatives, acquaintances or friends, 11% each make their choice based on information obtained from the Internet and on the recommendation of a builder or designer. Only 5% of respondents made their purchase thanks to the advertising they saw, and 3% – thanks to specialized TV programs.
When buying paint and varnish materials, consumers first of all pay attention to: quality of goods, price-quality ratio, brand name. And when choosing paint, they pay attention to its durability, environmental friendliness, color fastness, speed of drying, ease of application, good covering of surfaces.
Production, export-import of paint and varnish materials in Ukraine
Production of all types of paints and varnishes in 2011 increased slightly compared to 2010 and amounted to 212.9 thousand tons. Production of water-soluble paints and varnishes in 2011 amounted to 79.5 thousand tons, which is 0.3% less than in 2010, organosoluble paints and varnishes 81.3 thousand tons, which is 16.3% less than in the previous year, paints, varnishes and siccatives finished 52 thousand tons, which is 16.7% more than in 2010.
Structure of paint and varnish materials production by types:
Export of paint and varnish materials is insignificant (only 6.6%) and amounted to 12.4 thousand tons in 2011. Imports in 2011 amounted to 44.6 thousand tons of paints and varnishes. Import of all paintwork materials in 2011 increased by 23.3%. The share of imports in consumption is 18.2%. Most paint and varnish products are imported from Germany, Russia, Belarus, Finland, the Baltic States, the USA, Korea and other countries.

Ukrainian producers of adhesives and their market shares: Severodonetsk Azot Association CJSC (13.4%), ZIP LLC (13.1%), Edem LLC (4%), Leader Industrial Company LLC (2.2%), Snezhka-Ukraine LLC (0.7%).
There is a tendency of consolidation of players and displacement of small producers in the Ukrainian market of paint and varnish. New plants with foreign capital are being opened (in 2013 new paint and varnish plants of Eskaro Group AB were opened in Odessa). Opening of new paint and varnish plants, increase in the production of paints and varnishes by foreign companies under their own TMs at domestic production facilities contributes to the reduction of imports of waterborne paints and varnishes. In the first quarter of 2013 imports of waterborne paints and varnishes decreased by 7% compared to the same period of 2012. At the same time, the average price of imported products increased by 8.6%.
Imports of organically diluted paints and varnishes are on the contrary growing, and in the first quarter of 2013 increased by 10.3%. At the same time, about 40% of imported organic paints and varnishes are semi-finished alkyd varnish, which is imported to Ukraine from Russia and Belarus.
