Earlier in the article “Beer production process. Beer packaging“We have already told you about the brewing process and the packaging in which beer is most often bottled. In the article “Beer Market Analysis in Ukraine” we told you about the analysis of beer consumers and their preferences, the dynamics of beer production and turnover, and the structure of the beer market.

If you’ve read the market research carefully, you’ll remember that nearly 90% of all beer production is concentrated in the hands of three multi-brand corporate giants. These are: AB InBev (market share of about 35%), Carlsberg Ukraine (almost 30%) andObolon(approximately 23% of the market). The alliance of Efes and SABMiller (7%) and “Persha Privatna Browarnya” (about 5%) are steadily gaining momentum. The remaining insignificant market share is occupied by small local producers or producers of specialty beers.
Two breweries – Obolon and Persha Privatna Brovarnya – remain fully Ukrainian beer producers.
This article is devoted to the analysis of label and bottle design for beer. Having conducted a study of beer brands presented on the Ukrainian market the following trends can be noticed.
Based on consumer preferences, the most popular containers for beer bottling are 0.5 liter glass bottles and 1 liter plastic bottles.
Most popular colors used in beer label design
- golden yellow

- blue

- red

- silver

- black

- green

The most used elements on the label:
- brand name;
- type of beer;

- Coat of arms, patterns, spikelets, images of the beer’s place of origin and various communication inscriptions.
National brands have Ukrainian- or Russian-language names , while international and global brands most often have English and German names.
Glass beer bottle design
– The bottles into which the beer is bottled are predominantly brown and green glass.

– Exceptions – Miller Genuine Draft, Slavutich ICE, Corona Extra, Stary Melnik from Barrel Mild and Redd’s – are bottled in transparent glass bottles.

– The volume of glass bottles is 0.5 and 0.33 liters. However, recently Carlsberg Ukraine, the producer of the Baltika brand, changed the traditional capacity from 0.5 to 0.47 liters.
– Medium-price segment beers are mainly bottled in standard-shaped bottles.

– Above-average and premium beers – in bottles with unique geometry, additional inscriptions and graphic elements on the bottle itself.

– The label on a glass bottle is most often made in an oval shape (in the form of a rounded rectangle) or in the form of a shield.

– More rarely the label looks like a small rectangle, which is glued in the form of a belt or on the diagonal of the bottle.

– Self-adhesive labels are used for glass bottles. In addition to the front and counter label, the glass bottle is also labeled with a collarette, which most often bears the brand logo. brand logo.
– It has become a fashionable tendency to glue the label in place of the collarette, i.e. in fact the latter fulfills the functions of the former and contains all the necessary information.
– Glass bottles of beer are capped with a crown cork, which most often bears the brand’s logo.

– Some beer brands have more unique bottle closures – Swingtop hinged cap (TM Grolsch Premium Lager), ring cap (TM Tuborg GREEN, Efes Pilsener, Baltika, etc.).

Plastic beer bottle design
– Beer is bottled in plastic bottles of 1, 1.2, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 liters. The most popular bottle format is 1-2 liters. Beer bottles are mostly used in brown plastic, which absorbs the sun’s rays and thus protects the beer. Although some manufacturers bottle beer in green-colored plastic bottles (TM “Bely Medved”, “Slavutich”).

– Recently, manufacturers have begun to pay more and more attention to the design of the bottle, improving the shape and design. Some even “decorate” plastic bottles with various inscriptions and elements.

– The label on the plastic bottle is polypropylene and has a similar design to the label on the glass bottle.
Design of beer cans and kegs
As for aluminum cans and kegs, this container is the least popular, and its design almost completely adopts the label design from the beer bottle.
