Today, the main materials for 3D printing are PLA and ABS plastic. Both materials have long established themselves on the market and are used for 3D printing using layer-by-layer material build-up technology.
ABS(ABS)-plastic is a plastic formed by the polymerization process of such substances, as acrylonitrile (A) with butadiene (B) and styrene (S).
PLA plasticPLAplastic, or biodegradableplastic, is an aliphatic polyester with a lactic acid monomer. The materials used to produce this plastic are rapidly renewable resources such as corn or sugar cane, i.e. starch or cellulose.
Not so long ago PVA plastic. The well-known PVA glue is converted from a dry state into a liquid of the required consistency, then melted with the help of special equipment and formed into PVA threads or special granules, which are used for 3D printing. An even newer material is Nylon – is characterized by its resistance to a wide range of chemicals and solvents.
The materials discussed above are known to everyone involved in the 3D technology market. But these are not all materials. Manufacturers have gone a step further and are already using a wide variety of materials for 3D printing – clay, resin, seaweed, and many others.
A list of the most unexpected and most creative materials for 3D printing
White Resin by Formlabs:
3D printing equipment manufacturer Formlabs introduces a new material – White Resin. A year ago the company has already released two new materials for 3D printing – Clear Resin and Grey Resin.
The main feature of White Resin is the strikingly white and opaque color of the material, as well as the exceptional smoothness ofthe printed object surface. In addition, the new material is ideal for subsequent coloring.
White Resin will soon be available in the Formlabs online store at a price of $149 per liter, while (as of late summer 2014) it can only be purchased in a bundle with the company’s 3D printer (check the manufacturer’s website for the latest offer and prices, just in case).

Titanium powder for 3D printing auto parts:
UK-based metalworking company Metalysis has announced a new low-cost titanium powder suitable for 3D printing automotive parts and components.
Until now, the most popular materials for 3D printing have been plastics, due to the expensive process of producing titanium powders. But Metalysis has recently found a new low-cost way to produce titanium powder, which could become the most sought-after material for manufacturing equipment and machinery in the aerospace, defense and automotive industries.

For the production of titanium powder, Metalysis uses rutile, which is converted directly into titanium powder by electrolysis. This method of powder production allows the powder granule size, purity, morphology and the proportion of alloying elements in the composition to be varied as required.
The most amazing material of our time is graphene:
Graphene is a material suitable for 3D printing, with incredible potential for application in various fields (molecular programming, solar energy, etc.), a material that can change the lives of many people. In this regard, Canadian research company Lomiko Metals Inc. announced the opening of a new special laboratory Graphene 3D Labs Inc. which will focus on the development of high-performance graphene-based materials.
Material Synopsis: Graphite or graphene is composed entirely of carbon atoms, but 1 mm of graphite contains about 3 million layers of graphene. Graphite has a three-dimensional crystal structure, while graphene is a two-dimensional crystal 1 atom thick.

Wooden filaments for the 3D printer:
Dutch 3D printing material manufacturer colorFabb has launched a new material, WoodFill wood filaments.
WoodFill filaments are available in two types – Fine and Coarse. The main difference between these yarns is the quality of wood fiber processing. WoodFill Fine uses finely ground wood particles, WoodFill Coarse filaments are thicker – based on coarsely ground wood particles.
Wood filaments allow you to print beautiful and original vases, decorative elements and interior items. The finished objects are highly durable and are produced in a short time.WoodFill filaments consist of 30% pine wood fibers and 70% PLA plastic. WoodFill filament spools are already on sale at a price of 40 euros per 750-gram spool.

3D printer filaments made from seaweed:
Le Fabshop has introduced the world’s first SWF filament – a “green” filament, based on seaweed, for use in 3D printing.
The manufacturing company estimates that SWF material will be launched on the market in spring 2014.

Three new materials from Proto-Pasta:
Recently, scientist Aaron Crum and mechanical engineer Dustin Crum launched the Proto-Pasta project, which has developed three new materials for desktop 3D printer applications: Carbon Fiber Reinforced PLA, High Temperature PLA, and Polycarbonate-ABS.
Compared to the well-known ABS and PLA plastics, the new materials have improved performance and are affordable.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced PLA material has greater resistance to high temperatures than regular PLA plastic.
Polycarbonate-ABS (PC-ABS) is characterized by high elasticity and bending strength.

Rubber material for stereolithography:
MadeSolid has introduced to the market a new rubber-based material ideal for stereolithographic printing, the new material has a wide range of colors, allows printing objects in high resolution, odorless, easy to clean, affordable.

Silk-based 3D printing material:
The new material was based on raw silk. The raw silk was obtained from sustainable sources and treated with epoxy resin. The silk-based material is flexible and highly durable, it is thin and lightweight, and the material is ideal for 3D printer applications.

Polished and raw brass as a material for 3D printer:
Shapeways has introduced two new materials to the world – Polished Brass and Raw Brass.
Polished Brass is a material with a smooth, glossy, bright yellow surface. Printed with it, then plated with 22-karat gold, it is virtually indistinguishable from real gold jewelry.
Raw Brass is ideal for 3D printing antique or antique-inspired objects, and is also useful for prototyping jewelry and functional parts.

Soft plastic from Shapeways:
Shapeways has developed a new soft plastic, Elasto Plastics, for use in the production of summer footwear. Elasto Plastics has a milky white color, the material is very flexible, has an uneven grained surface, and is quite strong.

Transparent resin for 3D printer:
Clear transparent resin was developed specifically for stereolithography, using the technology of layering transparent resin and strengthening the layers with a special laser. Such resin is used for making detailed and rather complicated models.
You can purchase the clear resin from online retailers for $149 per liter.

3D printing clay:
Design students Tina Zidancsek, Danica Rzenicnik, Urška Skaza and Maja Petek from Slovenia have developed the PrintGREEN 3D printer, which can be used to easily print objects of any shape on a substrate covered with chia grass.
“Clay” for 3D printing was obtained by mixing – water, soil and seeds.
